Yes, No one likes weak signals and slow internet speed on Wi-Fi. This may be because of your old wireless router. There is nothing worse than a slow speed internet connection. Most of us are happy leaving the slow internet speed behind, and hence find lags on the internet to be a nightmare. If your internet speed is slow, you can speed up Wireless Router or Wi-Fi by the following methods:
Place the Wireless Router to Open Space
Sometimes the reason for slow internet is your wireless router. It may be not placed appropriately. Rather than placing it under closed spaces, for example, your kitchen sink, instead put it in an open space. Make sure that the surface you place it on is flat. Ideally, your wireless router should be placed in the center of your home. This ensures that each room gets good speed internet connection. Try to make sure that no thick walls or wallpapers are placed in between the modem and you. This is because Wi-Fi signals get hampered due to dense obstructions.
Switch Wi-Fi Channels
You might not know this, but your Wi-Fi networks also have various channels. Switching the channel of your Wi-Fi connection will allow you to avoid interference caused by other Wi-Fi networks using the same channels. The process of switching channels depends on the router model you have. As a rule of thumb, switch to 1, 6, or 11. These are the strongest connections.
Use Wi-Fi Signal Extenders
As the name suggests, a Wi-Fi signal extender extends the range of the Wi-Fi connection and does not boost its speed. However, sometimes slow speed in some area is due to a low range of your connection. If this is the case with your modem, a signal extender will ensure that the router is able to reach the dead spots in your house.
Change DNS for Speed
Changing DNS can boost your Internet Browsing Speed. Please keep in mind this will only help you with browsing speed. It will just increase the connectivity speed of your internet. DNS will never affect your internet speed, but it will improve the overall speed of your internet. Choose between Cloudflare’s 188.8.131.52 DNS or OpenDNS or Google DNS for a faster internet connection than before. The IP addresses used DNS are:
Cloudflare’s 184.108.40.206 DNS
- For IPv4: 220.127.116.11 and 18.104.22.168
- For IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001
My first recommendation is 22.214.171.124 DNS by Cloudflare. As a matter of fact, 126.96.36.199 is the best Public DNS, when it comes to speed.
- For IPv4: 188.8.131.52 and 184.108.40.206
- For IPv6: 2620:0:ccc::2 and 2620:0:ccd::2
OpenDNS was my first favorite before 220.127.116.11 DNS by Cloudflare but now it’s my 2nd recommendation.
- For IPv4: 18.104.22.168 and 22.214.171.124.
- For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844
Update Firmware of Router or Modem
All technologies, whether it be your smartphone or your wireless router, run on software. In case of modems, the software is called firmware. Updating the software can improve the performance of the router. The manufacturers of your modem may make such updates available for download. Download it and watch as the performance of the router improves.
Buy a New Router
If all else fails, maybe there is something wrong with your router. It is time to update to a new wireless router. As technology progresses, old routers may fail to deliver the required service. This may cause slow internet connection. Select a router which is able to deliver a high-speed internet connection and one which has a good range.
The chances are one of these hacks are bound to improve your internet speed. Enjoy your fast Wi-Fi connection. Don’t let an obstacle or a poor router transport you back in time.
